Tessa Perkins Deneault

PhD Student

Tessa Perkins Deneault is a PhD student, arts journalist, dance historian, and biographer. She regularly contributes to publications such as The Dance Current, Dance International, and Dance Central; and she writes reviews for her website, Arts Addict. She is the associate director of marketing & communications for SFU’s Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology (which includes SIAT). Tessa has recently published a book chapter, “Dancing on the Mountain: The History and Legacy of the SFU Dance Program,” in A Magical Time: The Early Days of the Arts at Simon Fraser University. She holds an MA in liberal studies, a BA in English and French literatures and publishing, a certificate of liberal arts, and a post-baccalaureate diploma in communication — all from SFU. She serves on the board of directors of the Vancouver International Dance Festival, takes dance classes at the Bez Arts Hub, and spends as much time as she can watching live theatre and dance. Tessa’s current interests continue a line of research from her master’s thesis, “Iris Garland: Modern Movement,” in which she conducted archival research and oral histories to create a biographical narrative amid Vancouver dance history. Her PhD research will focus on making archival artifacts and historical narratives about dance more accessible through interactive digital media.
